Fracture Healing - An Educational Guide


This way of healing is not so common. Primary fracture healing occurs when there is a correct anatomical reduction of a fracture which is stable with no gaps in between. This type of bone fracture healing only requires bone remodeling as no callus formation occurs. Also known as direct healing, primary healing takes a few months to several years, and this depends on the severity of the break. 

Secondary Bone Fracture Healing

Unlike primary healing, callus formation is seen in secondary fracture healing. There is a reason for this. 

The body opts for secondary healing when it is not possible to reduce a fracture in a stable position without any gap.
