Difference Between Joint Reconstruction and Joint Replacement – A Quick Guide

One of the commonest causes of joint degradation is aging. As our joints are in constant use, wear & tear in them over time is likely. With that, painful joint symptoms are experienced. As wear & tear occurs, it becomes difficult/painful for the person to walk. In such cases, people may use home remedies like heat or cold therapy, rest, or OTC drugs to improve pain. However, to get permanent or long-term relief, joint surgery may be required. Joint orthopedic implants may also be needed during surgery.

Two of the common joint surgery procedures are joint reconstruction and joint replacement. This is what we will be discussing in the post.

What is Joint Reconstruction?

Joint reconstruction as the name suggests is a surgical procedure that is carried out to repair minor damage to the muscles, tendons, or ligaments in the joints. In most cases, the surgery provides temporary relief from painful symptoms associated with joint disorders.

Joint reconstruction surgery can be performed using a minimally invasive procedure. Some of the joint conditions that can be managed with joint reconstruction include:

  • Patellar realignment
  • Deformity correction
  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries
  • Deformity correction
  • Cartilage transplant
